Native American Indian Symbols and Their Meanings

Arrow - Protection.

Arrowhead - Alertness

Badger - The ability to reach a desired goal.

Butterfly - Represents the butterfly that lands on flowers, then the medicine man uses these flowers in his medicine - carefree, transformer.

Buffalo - Steadfast endurance to rise above one's weakness. Can kill any evil thoughts, great spiritual protector and life builder.

Bear paw or bear track - Is a symbol for a good omen, strength and mobility.

Bear - Symbolizes adaptability, strength, introspection, the power of the soul.

Cat - Independence, grace and healing.

Corn - The corn is used very highly in the Indian culture because it is the way of life and survival. Corn is used in making meals, purifications and offerings.

Corn Maiden - Said to purify the women who grind the corn for ceremonies and other uses.

Coyote - The coyote is a trickster and characterizes laughter & humor.

Dragonfly - Flighty, carefree.

Dream Catcher - It is believed that each carefully woven web will catch your dreams in the night. The bad spirit dreams will get caught in the web and disappear with the morning sun. However, the good spirit dreams will find their way to the center spirit hole and will float down the sacred feather.

Eagle - A soaring spirit that transcends personal problems, a connection to the Divine.

Elk - Strength, agility, freedom.

Fox - Camouflage, protection, cunning, provider, intelligence.

Frog - Connection with water element, able to petition the spirits to bring forth abundant rain.

Heartline - Long life.

Horse - Has the possession of healing powers, stamina, mobility and strength.

Hummingbird - Messenger, stopper of time.

Lizard or Gecko - Brings sweethearts together, conservation, agility.

Kokopelli - Known as the humped back flute player is a symbol of prosperity, music and joy.

Man in the maze - The maze pattern represents the pattern of life - with obstacles to dim the way. But happy is the man who rises to the top.

Medicine Wheel - This is an ancient symbol used by almost all the Native people of North and South America. There are many different ways that this basic concept is expressed; the four grandfathers, the four winds, the four cardinal directions and many other relationships that can be expressed in sets of four. The medicine wheel can be used to help us see or understand things we can't quite see or understand because they are ideas and not physical objects.

Quail - Symbolizes sacred spiral, ceremonial, Holy

Rabbit - Alertness, nurturing.

Raccoon - Bandit, shy, resourceful.

Road Runner - Assists in bringing rain, also wards off witchcraft to protect homes.

Scorpion - Defense, self-protection.

Snake - Symbolizes life, death, rebirth, defiance and wisdom.

Sunface - Represents warmth, shelter for the old, bright future, and playfulness for the young.

Turtle - is a symbol of a creative source, long life, maturity and a strong will to survive.

Wolf - Teacher, pathfinder on the journey of survival, loyalty, success, perseverance.
